The author effectively preserves the language of the time period it represents, and her literary devices are gripping. There's no "dumbing down" for the sake of the children, but rather challenges them to think, decipher, and draw conclusions, all the while keeping it entertaining. My sixth grade son and I are reading this as a read-aloud, I think if he'd read it alone, he would've missed some of the details--characters and context are hard to keep up with at times, but when we read it together, I can help him connect some of those things. I plan to have my thirteen-year-old read it alone. I highly recommend this book, but I think it's written a little beyond the level its marketed to.Product details

There is a lot of violence and death since it’s all about battles. It’s a good choice for students learning about Charlemagne or the story of Roland.
I bought this book to my son for xmas 2012.
My son was interested to learn more about the story and all the details.

As a piece to go with the grown-up version of Roland, this story brings the past to life. Accessible to children and can be read at the same time as the Story of Roland. Interesting tale and an invaluable piece of history.
